PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026: Get ₹78,000 Subsidy and 300 Units Free Electricity Every Month - Here's How

Imagine your electricity bill dropping to near zero — and the government paying you up to ₹78,000 to make it happen. That's exactly what the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is doing for Indian homeowners right now. And the best part? You can apply from your phone, sitting at home.

What Is PM Surya Ghar Yojana?

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme launched on 13 February 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The name itself tells you the goal — Muft Bijli means "free electricity."

In simple terms: the government pays a large part of the cost to install solar panels on your rooftop. In return, you get to generate your own electricity, reduce your bills to almost nothing, and even earn money by sending extra electricity back to the grid.

Think of it like this. Right now, you are "renting" electricity from your state DISCOM (your electricity distributor company) every month. This scheme helps you "own" your electricity — just like buying a house instead of renting one. One upfront cost, decades of savings.

The government's target is to reach 1 crore (10 million) households by March 2027. As of early 2026, installations are happening at around 2 lakh homes every month. The scheme is very much active and open for applications right now.

How Much Will You Actually Save?

This is where it gets exciting. Let's break it down clearly:

The Subsidy (Government's Gift to You):

  • 1 kW solar system — subsidy up to ₹30,000
  • 2 kW solar system — subsidy up to ₹60,000
  • 3 kW or more — subsidy up to ₹78,000

Most Indian families go for a 3 kW system. A 3 kW setup normally costs around ₹1.8 lakh to ₹2.2 lakh. After the ₹78,000 subsidy, your actual cost drops to roughly ₹1.0–1.4 lakh. And several states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra also offer additional state-level subsidies on top of this.

The Free Electricity:

A 3 kW system can generate around 300 units of electricity per month depending on your location and sunlight hours. The average Indian household uses 200–300 units per month. So for many families, the electricity bill could drop to zero — or close to it.

Payback Period:

Most solar systems recover their cost within 3 to 5 years. After that, electricity is essentially free for 20+ more years. That's a smart long-term investment, much like a Fixed Deposit that pays you back every month in units of electricity.

What Is Net Metering — and Can It Actually Pay You?

Net metering is a system where, if your solar panels generate more electricity than your house uses, the extra power is sent back to the grid — and your DISCOM (electricity company) gives you credits or money for it.

Here's an everyday analogy: imagine you bake more rotis than your family can eat, and your neighbour buys the extra ones from you. Net metering works the same way — your solar panels are "baking" electricity, and the grid is buying the leftover.

Once your system is installed, the DISCOM sets up a special bi-directional meter (a meter that reads both what you consume and what you send back). You get credited for surplus units, which further reduces your bill — sometimes to zero or into the positive.

Who Can Apply — Eligibility Criteria

Before you get too excited, let's check if you qualify:

  • You must be an Indian citizen
  • You must own a residential property (flat owners in housing societies can also apply for common area installations)
  • You must have a valid electricity connection in your name
  • Your rooftop must be shadow-free and have enough space (at least 100 sq. ft. for a 1 kW system)
  • No existing solar system should already be installed with a government subsidy
  • The system must be installed by a registered (empanelled) solar vendor only

Commercial and industrial consumers are not eligible for this residential subsidy.

How to Apply — Step by Step

The entire process is online. Here's how it works:

  • Step 1: Go to the official website — pmsuryaghar.gov.in
  • Step 2: Click on "Apply for Rooftop Solar" and register with your mobile number (OTP will be sent)
  • Step 3: Enter your electricity consumer number (found on your electricity bill), name, address, and basic property details
  • Step 4: Select the system capacity you want (1 kW, 2 kW, 3 kW, etc.)
  • Step 5: Wait for DISCOM approval — this is your electricity company giving a green light
  • Step 6: Choose an empanelled solar vendor from the list shown on the portal. The vendor will visit your home, assess your rooftop, and install the system (usually in 2–3 days)
  • Step 7: After installation, DISCOM does an inspection and installs the net meter
  • Step 8: Upload your bank details and cancelled cheque on the portal. The subsidy is credited directly to your bank account within 30 days

If you have any questions during the process, the helpline number is 15555 (toll-free).

Quick Practical Takeaways

  • Apply at pmsuryaghar.gov.in — it's free and fully online
  • Maximum subsidy: ₹78,000 for 3 kW system
  • Free electricity: up to 300 units/month
  • Only use empanelled (registered) vendors — otherwise subsidy is rejected
  • Subsidy comes after installation, directly to your bank account
  • System cost recovery: usually 3–5 years, then free electricity for 20+ years
  • Helpline: 15555

Should You Apply Right Now?

If you own a home, have an eligible rooftop, and are tired of rising electricity bills — yes, absolutely. The scheme is live, the subsidy money is real, and the application is straightforward.

The government is pushing hard to reach 1 crore homes by 2027. As that target fills up, it's possible that scheme terms or availability could change. The smart move is to apply while the scheme is fully active and funded.

Even if you can't afford the remaining cost after the subsidy, many banks offer solar loans at low interest rates specifically for this scheme. You can check with your bank or the vendor for financing options.

Solar energy is no longer a luxury for rich bungalow owners. With PM Surya Ghar Yojana, it is now genuinely within reach for a middle-class Indian family living in a flat or independent house.
